Eating fresh, organic fruit and vegetables is a constant goal of mine to maintain my, and my family’s health.

But sometimes time, cost and convenience (and most recently for me, my broken big toe!) can all factor into how easily I can keep us stocked in organic produce for the week.

So, when a friend mentioned Misfits Market to me – a company that delivers organic, non-GMO fruits and vegetables straight to your door at an affordable price, I jumped on the chance to try it.

Who is Misfits Market?

Misfits Market is a Philadelphia-based company founded in 2018, that is striving to combat the food waste problem in our country while providing affordable access to healthy, organic produce.

They work with small and mid-size farms whose “ugly” and misshapen produce does not make the cut for grocery stores where produce needs to look “perfect” to the discerning eye of the buyer.

These small to mid-size farms do not have the infrastructure in place to donate this misshapen produce which leads to this perfectly good food being wasted. This is where Misfits Market steps in.

Currently Misfits Market works with farms in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to rescue and deliver this ugly, misshapen produce to people throughout the northeast.

So now farmers are getting paid for this misshapen food, less food is being wasted, and more people have access to fresh, organic produce.

Boxes are shipped weekly but you can alter your subscription as needed or even pause your subscription when traveling or on vacation.

By purchasing a box of organic produce, you are helping Misfits Market achieve several goals:

  • Support Local Farmers

  • Prevent Food Waste

  • Save the Environment

  • Save Consumers’ Money

  • Provide Access to Healthy, Organic Produce

Why I Love Misfits Market Organic Fruit and Vegetable Delivery

Fresh, Organic Produce

We are exposed to plenty of pollutants, allergens and toxins on a daily basis just from breathing air, so I try everything I can to limit my family from additional exposure to toxins.

This includes spending money on non-toxic health, beauty and cleaning products as well as purchasing organic food whenever possible.

I have already found a great source of organic chicken, heritage breed pork and grass-fed and grass-finished beef from Butcher Box, but I had yet to find a consistent source of organic fruits and vegetables.

Despite trying to steer clear of the conventional Dirty Dozen, the fruits and vegetables shown to have the highest level of pesticide residues, whenever possible, I still found it hard to find and buy quality, organic food.

Misfits Market totally solves this problem for me. I know that each week I am getting 18-20 lbs (in their Madness Box, the Mischief Box contains 10-12 lbs) of all organic, non-GMO fruits and vegetables.

Affordability

Even if I can find some organic produce at my local grocery store, it’s typically a lot more expensive than I feel comfortable or am able to afford on a weekly basis.

It’s sad that cost often trumps health in this case, but money is a factor too many of us can’t ignore.

Misfits Market estimates that their boxes of produce cost 30-50% less than it would to purchase that produce at your local grocery store.

Purchasing the Madness Misfits Market box at $34 plus the flat rate of $4.50 shipping brings the 20 lbs of produce to just $1.92/lb.

The smaller box option, the Mischief Box, is $19 plus $4.50 shipping for produce that is $1.95/lb.

At this price, Misfits Market offers me a huge savings over what I would typically pay in a grocery store or even a farmer’s market for organic produce.

Home Delivery

I’ve already been spoiled by Butcher Box with my home delivery of choice meats, so to have organic fruit and vegetable delivery as well is such a welcomed convenience.

And now that I’m nursing a broken big toe making walking around a grocery store really painful, delivery has been a godsend.

Broken toe aside, I can see delivery being very helpful in the winter months as well and for anyone who has limited mobility, limited time for shopping or who may otherwise have their hands full such as with a newborn baby.

You can also rest assured that they are mindful of their shipping packaging.

Misfits Market uses BioBags, fully compostable bags in lieu of plastic produce bags. Their boxes are made of recycled cardboard, and they also use eco-friendly insulation.

Supporting a Good Cause

An added bonus is knowing that with every purchase from Misfits Market, I’m also supporting a good cause.

Each purchase helps the small and mid-size farmers who supply the produce. Instead of their produce going to waste, they are now compensated for it.

Also, purchasing a Misfits Market subscription produce box is my way to help reduce food waste.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that 30 to 40 percent of all food produced in the country each year goes to waste.

If this company can help pave the way for reducing food waste, then I hope my support will show that other companies can as well.

Misfits Market is also gaining press about its hiring practices and payment of decent entry wages to its employees. It makes it all the sweeter to use my money to support a company that makes their employees a priority.

My First Misfits Market Box: What Stood Out

The Organic Produce Was Gorgeous

It’s funny that Misfits Market touts that they rescue “ugly” and misshapen produce because when I opened my first Madness box there wasn’t anything ugly about the produce.

In fact, I was shocked at how beautiful the ripe tomatoes were as well as the zucchinis which always have nicks and marks on them at the grocery store. Even the apples, which I would assume would be a potential ugly fruit, were completely firm and blemish free.

The salad greens were also amazingly fresh, not wilted or blemished.

You Get LOTS of Produce for Your Dollar

Opening my box, my husband was laughing at me because I kept gushing over how much was in there!

My kids and I had so much fun laying it all out and uncovering what was inside. I really didn’t have a concept of how much 18-20lbs of produce would be, but it was quite a lot!

My first Madness box contained:

  • 5 medium red potatoes

  • 5 small Vidalia onions

  • 3 medium bok choy

  • 2 medium bunches of kale

  • 2 small butternut squashes

  • 6 cups of mixed greens

  • 4 medium zucchini

  • 2 bunches of scallions

  • 5 small oranges

  • 8 small apples

  • 6 tomatoes

  • 2 large Chioggia beets

  • 22 shishito peppers

We Ate More Vegetables!

With a box full of vegetables filling my refrigerator and counter, I know we definitely ate more servings of vegetables the following week.

Since we are helping prevent food waste, I was really diligent about planning how to use all of our food when normally I wouldn’t be so proactive (so a big thank you Misfits Market for getting me more organized!).

I was also inspired to try out some new recipes I found on Pinterest.

You Get a Large Variety of Produce

I’ll admit that I can often fall into a rut of cooking and serving the same, few vegetable over and over.

I have to give Misfits Market props for not only sending me vegetables that I know my family likes to eat, but also sending some that I don’t typically buy to give us more variety.

Eating a variety of vegetables is important because you get a wider spectrum of vitamins and nutrients.

Having received two HUGE Chioggia beets but never having tried them before, I was determined to figure out what to do with them.

I’ll admit that when I first cut up the beet and took a taste, I didn’t have high hopes, but after I put this Raw Chioggia Beet Salad with Honey-Lime Vinaigrette Salad together my taste buds were singing high praises of this beautiful beet!

This salad was extremely easy to put together. The vinaigrette really mellowed the beet flavor in my opinion, so I would recommend waiting a few hours to eat it after putting everything together.

I also tried a new recipe, Roasted Butternut Squash Kale Salad with Chickpeas and Cranberries, to use 3 of my Misfits Market box ingredients.

The oranges that I used in the dressing is what really made this salad a delight for the taste buds.

It Inspired Our Picking Eaters

Vegetables in general are a tough thing to get kiddos to eat, am I right?

My daughter actually eats a fair amount but my son is another story. You don’t know how happy it made me to see both kiddos try new vegetables this week because they were curious about them.

Both tried the Chioggia beets and my son raved about the kale salad.

Never would I have guessed that he would have eaten kale for dinner, so that alone is reason to thank Misfits Market!
